Real conditions differ
Scenarios are simplified. Terrain, weather, wildlife behavior, snowpack, water, group dynamics, and your own abilities change the right decision. A "recommended" response reflects one reasonable approach. It is not the only one and does not guarantee any outcome.

Backcountry travel carries risk of serious injury or death. Complete hands-on training suited to your activity (for example avalanche, swiftwater, wilderness first aid, navigation, and wildlife-safety courses), check current local conditions and land-manager guidance, and carry appropriate equipment and a way to call for help.
