The Loose Block
Alpine scramble, class 4 ridge. Late afternoon.

The Loose Block

The setup

You're moving unroped along an exposed class-4 ridge with a partner 20 feet behind you. You test a refrigerator-sized block for a handhold. It shifts — the whole thing is loose, balanced on rubble. If it goes, it goes down the gully your partner is standing in.

Adaptive mode

Score multipliers rise with your accuracy. The decision window tightens after every recommended call and widens after every miss. Miss the window and the step scores zero.
